About FSC Certification

The Forest Stewardship Council sets standards for responsible forest management. Chain of Custody certification guarantees that wood that comes from certified, responsibly managed forestlands is tracked throughout the supply chain, from the forest to the consumer. Conscientious consumers can look for the FSC logo on wood or paper products to know they are supporting forest management that protects biodiversity and supports local communities.

FSC certification reflects a growing trend in the paper and printing industry of companies making more environmentally and socially responsible supply chain decisions.

FSC Core Labor Requirements

While the protection of workers’ rights has always been part of FSC’s principles and mandatory for forest management certificate holders, the new FSC Core Labor Requirements have now also been included in the FSC Chain of Custody standard (FSC-STD-40-004-v3-1).

Diamond Packaging conforms to FSC Core Labor Requirements.

Protecting Forests for Future Generations

The Forest Stewardship Council sets standards for responsible forest management. A voluntary program, FSC uses the power of the marketplace to protect forests for future generations.

FSC harnesses market demand to ensure forests are responsibly managed. Because FSC is the gold standard in forest certification, it is the only system supported by groups such as WWF, Sierra Club, Greenpeace, Natural Resources Defense Council and National Wildlife Federation.

Today, more than 380 million acres of forest are certified under FSC’s system, including more than 150 million acres in the U.S. and Canada.

The Value of FSC

FSC-certified forests have environmental, economic and social benefits.

As the world’s most trusted sustainable forest management solution, FSC labeling tells customers that the materials used originate from sustainable and legal sources.

Zero Deforestation
Although trees are harvested, there is no net loss of forest over time.
Environmental Protection
FSC certification requires biodiversity to be maintained, and high conservation value areas - including old growth forests – to be protected.
Indigenous Peoples’ Rights Respected
FSC certification requires forest inhabitants to be consulted and engaged, and cultural rights to be maintained.
Fair Wages and Work Environment for Workers
FSC certification requires training, safety and decent wages for all workers.

Forests For All Forever

The world’s most reputable environmental organizations recognize FSC as the most trusted certification system for forest management.

It means you can trust that this and other FSC-certified products come from forests managed to keep them intact and healthy for the people and animals who depend on them – for all, forever.

Sustainable Sourcing Metrics

Certified Paperboard

Diamond tracks progress on sustainable sourcing of certified paperboard products.

In 2022 over 99% of all packaging was made from renewable or recycled paperboards, many FSC-certified.

We set a target to increase the use of certified paperboards by 1% per year over the next 10 years (10% total), based on a 2012 baseline. In 2022, 99% of all paperboard purchases came from certified sources, exceeding our target. In 2023, our goal is to purchase at least 99.5% of all paperboard from certified sources. (From Sustainability Report 2023.)

FSC Labeling

Many companies are looking at sustainable packaging design as one aspect of the larger role of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), which includes sustainability, diversity, and socially responsible business practices. They recognize that brands, including many smaller boutique brands, are winning over consumers by doing “the right thing”.

Diamond is certified to apply FSC on-product labels with the following claims: MIX and RECYCLED. The FSC on-product logo can be used on brands’ folding cartons when utilizing FSC certified paperboard.

Conscientious consumers can look for the FSC logo on paper products to know they are supporting forest management that protects biodiversity and supports local communities.
